My computer started giving me trouble while using Internet Explorer 5.0 about two months ago. It would completely lock forcing me to reset. After trying various things with no improvement I decided to reformat. I still have the same problem even though no software other than Windows 98 SR2 is installed.
The usual reason for a PC to completely lock is a hardware conflict. Check Device Manager or use the Hardware Conflict Troubleshooter (accessible from Windows Help) to ensure that no conflicts exist. If they don't, then unfortunately it is rather difficult to know what else to check.
The problem could be almost anything: hardware incompatibility or a damaged component possibly caused by a failure to observe proper static precautions during assembly. However, since the problem seems to occur while you are connected to the internet, it would be worth paying close attention to the modem.
